Episode 11- Legacy

nêhiyaw musician Kris Harper embraces his family’s artistic legacy by composing a unique song using his late mother’s poetry. This episode features interviews with Kris’s aunt, Florence, and Kris’s collaborator, Jason Borys, who both have warm memories to share.

Written in 2018/2019 for a residency that Jason and I attended at the National Music Center in Calgary with our previous band. This was one song out of a small score of songs that we initially wrote together. As well, being able to sing one of my mother's poems is such an honour for me. Her strength and honesty shaped how I operate in this world.

Dedicated to our mothers; Patricia Lynn Borys, Hilary Harper and Jane's mother, Georgina Begonia Rose Holowchuk.

Hazelnut

water dripping softly somewhere
someplace close by
stuck on a thought a word
unable to move on

sharp staccato sound
piercing my walls
voices disguised as rhythms

movements jarring intruding
breaking down my bedroom door
rendering

consistently trying to get inside
inside of my house
to soak to quench the thirsty seeds
laying dry
dusty dormant on the shelves upstairs

my thoughts into heaps
of empty hazelnut shells
left lying on the kitchen floor
